who said that? I had been told the same thing a few months back by one of the guys at herons! i had also asked the same question to Corin at greenwoods and he disagreed that there was a blanket ban on everything..

I believe that there are bans on allot of trees being imported from japan, im not sure its all trees, but that has been the case for some time for certain species like black pine..i dont believe that soils have been banned i think that one of the main producers of akadama went bust so there will be less being exported..im not 100% up on the ins and outs of it all, but Corin seemed to have a much better idea about the answer to that question, hopfully he will read this post..

Well i hear these rumours on and off as well
I know for definate that trees can be imported from Japan as i have just seen a massive consigment arrive at my local bonsai stockist.
I think there are some issues with maples cause of the big long horn beetle (right nasty looking booger) but other than that i dont know for sure

its like you get a joiner in to do something and all of a sudden there are wood shortages.
A plasterer always tells you there are plaster shortages.
price creeps up if things are in short supply as we all know only too well

Hey John, I was told on the phone by the guy from wattstons bonsai, that trees such as the trident maple could not be imported because, of the bettle living in the trees and soils.

I think thats not truely correct

there are restrictions on importing acers from Japan, China etc at the moment as it has been decided they need to be quaratined 2 years prior to export. This means that some should arrive next year once the 2 years is satisfied. Some nurseries in China have been given the all clear and can export acers now this year. All of this is done under strict control and licence. Also many shipments are being subject to soil sampling and destrucutive testing with upto 10% of trees being basically cut up to see if grubs are found - think about this next time you moan about prices of imported trees !

Its getting generally more and more difficult to meet these requirements and there fore less being imported. If you have your eye on buying an imported tree do so while you can find them, as sustainability could be a problem in future years.

Sol has always been difficult to import - but thats why Akadama is a "growing medium" and not soil

Guess what, it was the guy at Herons who told me that aswell! I couldnt see why Akadama could be stopped, I did think it was a load of crap just wanted to check! Many thanks

ha ha.. its the way you wrote you original post that made me wonder if that info had come from herons.

the guy was just trying to get a sale i think, as he suggested i stocked up on akadama before i would before it runs out. and raved on about the amount of import trees they had suggesting that they wont be able to import any more, so the prices will raise at a rapid rate on imported trees.

thats not a direct quote its just how i remember it coming across on the day..and iit was one of the guys there, not Peter Chan.

That's one of the reasons why I don't buy imports myself. I mean, what's
wrong with the local field grown & e.u. yamadoris. Thank god, I've got my
sources back home to send me tool, scrolls and figurines for free or fraction
of the price here. I'm going to hong kong to shop for a month, i'll be visiting
china. If i have time, i'd visit taiwan and japan to laugh at prices and kick myself.
Nothings cheap in UK, you'd be better of going to neighbouring
countries where they sell them cheaper. Just make sure you know a nursery owner
first before doing this as they can help you bring them in for you in thier van.
Importing potatoes and beans is cheaper than growing them locally.
As for Akadama, there's loads of alternative like pumice and cat litter. I believe
UK is too wet for akadama unless you have green net above your trees and it
creates too much emission because it's imported. Don't u think?
