Post subject:  Member map?

hi all,

Am I imagining it, or did we at one time start a map of where members lived?

If so, can someone point me in the right direction?

If not, I'd like to start one. The idea would be similar to the nursery map, in that people could put a little pointer to their rough location, and then when another member happens to be in the area they could maybe arrange a visit via pm or email? Also it would be a nice way of people who happen to live close by to realise this and maybe get together.

I know I'd be more than happy to chat with anyone over a cup of tea next time they're in Cardiff (as long as no-one takes offence if i happen to be busy that day ;))

Anyway, what's the consensus on this? I'm not talking about publishing addresses or anything, and it would have to be strictly opt-in, but i think it would be a nice way to boost the community feel of the forum.

It might be less confusing if everyone just put where they live in their profile.

As an example only I see 'Woop' just has Sunny Cornwall....it's a big place. I know it is Falmouth, but do others?????

Sorry Woop not picking on you just an example.

It can make a big difference where in the world you live, when it comes to discussing the little trees!!!!

Seems like a good idea dude, I'm sure one of the more technical minded members could rustle something up, even if it's just for passing on local nursery info or some nice yamadori spots, neighbours taking down hedges etc'.

I know, not many people know their way around cornwall or where Falmouth is, it's only 50 miles at the furthest point, it's a day trip anywhere anyway.

Perhaps the easiest way would be to add a 'location' column to the members list? But I suspect that may be too arduous for John. J.

thats a reasonable idea Jimothy as I seem to live in a bonsai wasteland, so i dont get any bonsai visitors. there was a forum member not far from me (Ron_Gunn) but i dont think he's posted for some time.

ps my profile says it all :smallthumb:

Yes, I realise people (should) put this information in their profile, but that doesn't mean you can see at a glance which members live where. The option to sort the member list by location would be a start, but wouldn't help in instances where people who live close together might put down entirely different information (for instance, within a few miles of me, people could be listing their locations as Cardiff, Newport, Gwent, Cowbridge, Llandaff, Blackwood to name just a few). I really think that the map is the only solution to this.

I'll look into setting one up, and then post a link so people can (hopefully) add their own information to it. If that's not possible, I'll sort some way of collecting the info from members who want to be involved and then add it to the map myself.

OK, I've set up a map as a test run, and you can see it (and my own lonely entry) here.

The map will only be available to view through this link, so shouldn't attract the attention of just anyone, but my intention is still to make the placemarkers deliberately vague so that people's exact locations can't be identified.

I could have set it up so that you could add your own locations, but to do this I had to allow anyone to edit any part of the map, which might get a bit chaotic, so for the time being I'll add locations and information myself.

If anyone is willing to participate, can you please send me a PM with your USERNAME in the subject heading (this will be used by others to idenify you on the forum) and the following information in the message text:

Name:
Location: (Including the first part of your postcode, which I'll use to generate the pointers)
Number of trees:
Skill level: (Beginner, Improver, Enthusiast, Expert, etc.)

Obviously, participation is entirely voluntary, and I will remove anyone who wishes to be removed at any time, but I would urge all members to consider adding themselves to my list, as you all stand to make friends and help others move forward in our fascinating hobby, but if you don't get involved nobody benefits at all.

However, I would add that people should use their discretion when arranging to meet up or invite others to their homes. I would suggest that you only make these sort of arrangements via pm or email (to prevent your details from being publicly viewable), and only with those people you consider to be trusted members of our community. Commmon sense precautions (like making sure someone else is at home, and verifying people's identities), are also advised.

When you say it will only be visible via the forum does that exclude people via twitter and facebook. John F recently said that anything on here goes onto twitter and facebook too. (Don't understand why or how and I'm not altogether happy about it but that's another issue). However, does it mean that Joe Bloggs on facebook can see your map?
