spotted this fukien tea earlier today and at 5 pounds I had to buy it. I have no experience with this species, am currently keeping it under a skylight with my 2 ficus retusa, misting it and making sure it's fairly warm. I liked the trunk, and though it's in desperate need of a repot and a prune I thought I'd put a picture up before I do anything else. It's only shohin size, and I was planning on keeping it that way.

Only prune when you have a plan - this tree seems fine right now. I would neither repot it nor prune it. They are fussy at the best of times. Just try keep it alive until late spring then repot it and put it outside. |

I would like to make some tea, I'm a bit of a tea fiend  I read that the roots rot quite easily and the soil is pretty shocking. but i suppose it should be alright til spring.

I think bargain Fukien Teas are a bit of a trap. They always look such nice trees, but are just too tempremental and invariably end up dying. I would particularly not take one on just before winter. However, having said that. At £5 it is almost disposeable and I am sure you will get at least £5s worth of enjoyment out of it. You will also be left with a bonus spare pot at the end which may come in useful for other trees. |

So, "Why do they sell them?", you might ask. Well, they are cheap to propagate from woody cuttings, have pretty flowers, interesting trunks and deep shiny foliage. The perfect retail potted plant. Don't confuse it with a bonsai though... |
