Hi, I have this shrub in a pot in the garden. I haven't a clue what it is as it was there when i moved in. I think it has some bonsai potential. I was just wondering if anyone could ID it please?

I don't think it's bay, Daryl - leaves too soft, and dark bluish berries? They should narrow it down. J. |

not a privet or bay - it has white flowers on before the berries right? |

I'd go with a viburnum spp. perhaps tinus variety eve price to be exact. I grew one about 5 years ago and they respond well to pruning but not too often, leaves do reduce in size but slowly. Difficult to get branches to stay in position as they need constant re-wiring. the flowers and berries make it worth while-ish. |

We had a V.Tinus in the garden but dug it up a few years back. We found they are very prone to tiny caterpillar infestations and the leaves got eaten to pieces. There was also a nasty smell that came from it. Shame, because they are a nice bush. |

We had that smelly caterpillar problem here last year. It took me a long time to connect the two things - we thought the smell was from cats or foxes using the garden as a toilet. Anyway, I evntually looked it up and found it is caused by a beetle specific to viburnum - the viburnum beetle no less! http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/Pro ... px?pid=556 I sprayed it with Provado Ultimate Bug Killer as recommended and cut it back hard to get rid of all the very damaged leaves and it is now back to full health. I will spray again in the spring to catch any newly hatched larvae. |

Daryl - I hadnt seen that caterpillar advice before. Nice one. We have quite a few old tree and shrub books in the house and all of them stated V.Tinus was generally pest free. Although we arent organic, I still dont like spraying plants with chemicals and so I much prefer more robust shrubs that dont need any attention. I also dont like shrubs that are prone to Mildew or tar-spot. |
