Hi all, today whilst inspecting my trees i noticed some wood pulp pellets on the surface of some of the trees potting media. I fear there is some sort of wood boring insect at work & I'm currently inspecting the bark of the trees where these pellets were found in their pots?
These pictures show the size of the pellets in relation to the grain size of the cat litter & the pile of what looks like sawdust that the collected pellets amounted to. I would appreciate any thoughts on what they are or have you had a similar experience?

Roy, my instinct is to look for holes in the bark. How else could a wood-boring insect get out of the tree? Is ithere a pattern of which trees are affected, or is it any old trees? J.

Hi John, i have just been out & had a good look round the trees where the pulp was found in the respective pots & i cant find any holes. I have had wood borers in the past & its a real worry.

Some pictures below of a wood-boring wasp that got into my garden gate & of the damage caused to a large rowan tree in my garden.

On the rowan tree all i noticed was a few small pellets on the ground at the base of the tree, which i thought were bird droppings. I then noticed a hole in the bark around 5mm dia & as i excavated the rotten wood out of the hole it opened out into quite a cavern.

With the gate attack, I noticed a small pile of sawdust, again this hole opened out to quite a size & as you can see, I did retrieve a wasp of some sorts

some more pictures of an attack to an acer in 2009 when i spotted several small holes (2mm dia) which on investigation was found to have caused severe wood rot through the heart of the tree. i suspected this attack to have been woodworm or something similar as the holes were small, but the damage extensive, so when i find wood pulp like I have today, then i worry!!! I have now resigned myself to losing this acer as it is getting weaker & weaker by the year.

Golly Roy! Those are real attacks! But do your present treee have bark holes? 'Cos if they don't I think you might just be OK. Perhaps others with more experience than I will advise you differently. J.

I thought for a minute it looked like a Pigeon Tremex but I'm not so sure now because the head looks different. There is another wasp that lays eggs that eat up the larvae of this one. Poor you though and poor Acer.

hi
if you have bought any trees in which originate from asia over the past few years there is alwasy a possibility of an asian long horn beetle (probably unlikley but worth a mention) this is a pest that lays its larvae inside the tree which then eat the inside of the tree and break out about 2 years later. boskoop in holland where stopped from exporting at the beggining of the year while the ministy checked for this pest even we had a visit ill look for the info they left me and i will post it as you may find it interesting.

the ministry just burn any suspisous trees so it sounds like a problem none of us want
