Wow, wow, wow!

Our French friends have created a Bonsai application which installs on your PC and will log your trees info! It's fantastic. The below screenshot is the French version, but when you install, you can select English.

The download link is on the left; http://otetsudaiqt.sourceforge.net/screenshot.html

Age, purchase, care sheets, botanical names, pictures, and events such as repotting, air-layering, grafting dates; it's one place to keep all of your bonsai information and notes.

I don't have an excel file - only folders full of dated photos which go into species specific folders, with each individual tree having its own. It's not very well set-up.

I'm having a lot of fun with this programme. It'll take a while to add all of my trees, but in the long run it'll be worth it. The only problem for you guys though is that because the French designed it, it has a lot of commonly used European tree. You can however edit the database though!

Hi

I have to confess that I have tried programs like this in the past, then used them less and less

Having just spent the last 12 months on and off constructing my excel 'tree-record' file, I'm a bit miffed at the thought of transferring it all to the one from the glorious republic. So at least for the present I propose to stay excellent.

But I have now begun to sort my photos out along Gareth's line - one folder per tree, all photos of that tree chronologically in that folder. Apart from anything else this shows clearly what crap photos I was taking 4 years ago. (No need, anyone, to refer to the high level of art I have recently been attaining.) I have also been amazed by the amount of growth some of them have put in.

SJ.

I was a bit taken back by it. It's good for people such as Treebeard who can enter "Hobbiton trayscape" and such. I considered "Bertie", "Oscar" etc but none of my trees suited those names, so I ended up just giving them their common name which appears anyway!

I have a similar programme for my snakes; feeding, shedding, cleaning, weight, length etc, but like others have said, it was a novelty and I know off of the top of my head when I did what, probably because it's short term. Bonsai however is very opposite. The downside to that is using the programme for years. I think what I'm going to do is reserve the programme for my better trees.

I think your documentation of your trees is presented and organised well. On the numerous occasions we have sat down and read, I've found it extremely easy to follow. I can see why you wouldn't want to change. I did try my hand at Excel like yours, but failed miserably.

It took me about 2 hours to sort all of my trees into individual folders. Like you, I was amazed at the growth some have put out. Seeing the trees evey day, it seems they're imperceptible. Except Buxus of course, which even the camera cannot detect!

Totally agree with Treebeard. I've used OT2 myself even when it first realeased, back then it was just OT.
I take photos of each tree twice a year, even seedlings and just dump it all in a folder.
