| Post subject: | Training Trees |
I am thinking of purchasing a selection of tray / pot grown trees for growing on and training into bonsai. There are ten trees including oaks, ashes, limes, hawthorns, scots pines, larch etc and apparently they are 3 years old plus and are approximately 40cm high. Obviously, I need to be prepared and have everything ready for when they arrive as they are coming from a mail order company. What kind of pots should I be planting them into - bonsai training pots or plain larger plastic ones? Should I be planting into Academia or basic bonsai soil mix? And how long would it be with trees of this age before they are ready to be trained, wired etc? I know I'm probably running before I can walk here, but the prospect of making something out of these is quite appealing. Any help would be gratefully received! |

if you are getting young seedlings or whips they will need extensive training, ground growing will be the fastest route if possible, other wise bigger grow boxes or trays will help, the pines need to have thought put in really early in the process or before you know it they will outgrow your plans. i suggest reading as much info you can for the pines, the larches may be similar i dont have any experience with larch. the rest seem to be deciduous trees and will give you good results quickly with the right care, ground or grow box and a couple of years growing will get you some nice smaller trees. it all depends on your ideas of what ya want jamie edit- my first sentance didnt make sense |
