Following on from the thread entitled "Do you find it hard to pass up bargains?", do you find it hard to sell your trees?

When my collection began building at a fairly fast rate, I decided I would sell trees too. It's all very well, but I've grown quite an emotional attachment to them, which is counter-productive if I want to shift them to make room for new material.

I made a list of the trees I would be upset to lose to harsh weather as a way of determining what I value more so. It didn't work, because when I'm transparent with myself, I don't want to pack up any of my trees and send them away, as I often think of what they could become.

How do you decide which ones to sell?

I lie in bed at night knowing I have way too many trees and I know the sensible thing to do is to get rid of some one way or another so I can concentrate more on the ones left.

But then I start to think about which ones I would dispose and I weaken ....

think of it as a way to get better trees. you may sell five trees with a couple of years work on them to get a tree that you know you will spend a lifetime on.

i would think the hardest part is finding someone to buy them, & I'm not trying to be disrespectful to your trees as i haven't seen them.

i also look upon it as you would when buying a new car, you never miss your old one once your sat behind the wheel of your new one, or do you?????

however in the past I have moved koi on to make room for new ones & i always try to make sure that they go to a good home.

E-bay, E-bay, and thrice E-bay. There's a wide market for them on there and you can sell for a lot more than you would at a club. For all the trees I have purchased off of there I have kept back the packaging with selling in mind to supplement my student income! Unfortunately, I just can't bring myself to do it yet.

Ebay is the way for under £50-100 trees. I've sold a few on there that i no longer wanted. That wasn't my intention when i brought/collected them. After 2 years into bonsai i could see that most the trees i had would never come to much and wasn't worth my time trying do something with them. I sold them on and the i money i made went on better material or tools related to bonsai. I have some trees now that i practice on and when the time is right i will sell them on (hopefully) to get better material.
Not having a disposable income and my commitment to my family (of course). Bonsai comes down the line somewhat. So i have to save and budget if i want some new material.
If the price was right then i'd sell all but one of my trees. Rubbish, i suppose even that sentimental tree has its price. :suro:

it would have to be a good price mate ;)

i find i have my trees that i want and then i have a stock of growing on trees, if it gets to much, which it isnt as all thats happening with them at the moment is water and feeding, some have been wired out, mostly my shimps, i would sell them but at the moment i dont think they are worth selling as they are still at quite a young level in training, but if they were to sell then i would be happy to part with them, but there are 5 or so trees of mine that i would not sell at all i dont think, ask me again in five years  ;)

I donated a lot f my pre bonsai last year to the club auction

Although some of them will make decent trees in years to come, i just felt it was time i moved them on.

In so far as more formed bonsai its difficult to get rid as most of my trees have been taken through the stages from yamadori or nursery stock to where they are now.

Though as someone else pointed out its good to bring in better quality stocks if it means letting go of some you have had for a while.

I get rid of some but the sheer volume of trees never really changes :25pimp:

I was talking to Don the other week about trees and we got round to the subject of space for housing more, my answer was an easy one i still have loads of space out the back garden as i dont have any trees in it yet. Mine are all in my enclosed driveway so i could maybe triple my collection before the garden gets slightly crowded.

He says as he considers this year to be the one he has t obuilt decent benches :200unsure:
