i go by diameter as if you go circumnfrence it can be decieving in trunk size. measure across at the widest point on the front of the tree is usually the way, i generally take it from just above soil level as to not hit flare from the nebari, this way i also have to give a trunk measurement and nebari spread which will give the veiwer a better idea on size of the tree  jamie
