My Maple I wish to air-layer is now unfurling, and my Willow already has leaves. I'll start this weekend.

dont feed maple to early, ive only fed my evergreens..wait untill new growth has hardened off, it going to be some time off for that i think..
i dont have willow so dont know what to say about that ::dunno:

There is logic behind it. My maples in pots won't be fed until April or so. The one in question I wish to multiple-layer is 9'-10' tall! The willow will probably be rafted, so I want plenty of growth on both.

I have been thinking of feeding some maples early as all i want to is fatten them up and get loads of growth so not bothered about leaf size for a few years?? Not sure though, I feel inclined to treat them like all my other maples??

Failed again to remember to feed - that's now 3 days in a row.

Don't be too keen Pete, a normal time to start feeding them is probably May.
Start feeding plentifully then and make sure they are in large enough pots.
Feeding before they are even in leaf may seem like you are getting the season startd early but if it is not ready yet you are better giving it mor efeed once it is ready then more feed before it is ready.

Thanks paul :201thumbup:
the maples I was thinking of fating up are the acers I'm doing the trunk fuse project with, so they are in an oversized pot.
I will hold off till may.

They are in a large pot in a shelterd spot at the mo, I intend them to move into the greenhouse once if have freed up some space in there.
