Hi everyone,

Last april I done a air layer on this trident maple, with it being up at my mums house completely forgot about it for the whole year some how. It has been left outside during all the cold frosts. After taking off all the mainly dry sphagnum moss here is what I'm left with, the roots are all white, when I rub the roots with my finger there seems to be live roots beneath, should I give it the chop and try and plant?

Cheers guys

I would plant it now with some more moss around the roots

Looks like a successful airlayer to me. Well done. Treat it with kid gloves for a while and it will reward you with a nice tree. :hatoff:

Here it is now after your advise, potted up in pure sphagnum moss, should I leave outside or in the greenhouse (unheated and door open) for a while?

Here is what I'm left with now on the bottom half of the tree, should I chop it lower down? Also do I cut a "v" shape into it or flat or on an angle?

Thanks again guys!

I would cut it on the angle and seal it like this:

Not one to question Peter Adams expertise, I've always wanted to ask, why cut at an angle immediately? Why not cut horizontal, parrallel to the ground, and then once you see what backbudding you have and have selected the leader, then cut at an angle?

Personally i would have just put a bit of moss in there along with kittydama but someone with more expertise will say whether thats right or wrong

What do you mean, Don? He has planted the airlayer in pure sphagnum moss. Not a granule of kittydama in sight. Or have I got it wrong?

p.s. I've just read this again, Don. You mean he SHOULD have put kittydama in there? Sorry. I would have thought sphagnum moss for a while would be OK. Maybe add the kittydama over time.
Sorry - wires crossed again !!

Furrag I think it's just to stop rot if it was cut flat water would stay on the trunk were as if it's cut on an angle water will run off.
