Hiya Fingers crossed (never a good opening statement) I repotted my trees yesterday in 100 % Sophisticat I ...errr.. should have read up before doing so but I was impatient, due to life being so hectic (blame blame) I was off out the house 8am purchasing cat litter, but shop was shut, so off round to my dads to dig up Hawthorne which I said I was going to do in winter. Back home via cat litter stockist. Should have then read about repotting, but didnt, just repotted and bare rooted the trees, except for one which was very stubborn ... now am panicking about my bull in a china shop approach, and thinking I should have left plenty soil on roots. So fingers crossed. |

Any idea on tree species and where they are kept? Did you do any of the following...? sieve the SP to get rid of any of the dust. Cover the holes in the pots with drainage mesh put some SP in the bottom of the pot to nestle the roots in to. secure the tree in the pot with a wire. work the SP into the root system gradually (poking in with a chopstick or similar) check the trees were nice and stable in the pot (not all loose and wobbly) water in well afterward. When in doubt try the search section on here or have a look on Bonsai4me, there's loads of experience shared up there |

They are still in large pots so not wired them in, but the mesh might have helped. I didn't seive, but I washed the cat litter before. Watered plenty after. They seem quite secure. Hornbeam, beech, a maple and a hawthorne |

Don't worry, what's done is done. I never seive my cat litter and never wash it, Mother Nature does that bit for me. They should be ok, just wait and see |

It is worth taking time before you do these jobs to make sure you have everything to hand. Im sure your trees will be fine. |

I'm just amazed by the way in which people talk about Cat Litter! Or the more laughable 'Kitty-Litter;' or even better ... 'Kittydama.' Broken record then. The manufacturer can add whatever toxic poisons (to those already present), in whatever way, and whenever they feel so inclined, and never let you know. But hey. You already know that.  I can just hear the manufacturer replying to a complaint about a dead Bonsai planted in CL. "SORRY .... you used our CL for what exactly?????" |

You really made me stop and think when you posted that the other day. I had honestly not even thought about it like that before. Just followed the generally accepted recommendation. Not any more. I'll be getting some of the proper stuff for my future repots. Thanks for the warning, Mike - you could have saved some precious trees from a terrible fate

Agree with you on that one Mike. Why risk losing a tree by planting it in a media that could have a harmful chemical added to it without you knowing anything about it until your trees start suffering or worse dying. Especially when Corin (Greenwood) sell 30 litres of graded and no additive Moler for about the same money as it would cost you to buy the equivalent volume of kitty litter from the supermarket, yes if you are not local to Greenwood you have to factor in the postage( thats not as expensive as you may think) but in my opinion its a small price to pay for peace of mind and healthy trees. It seems to be re-usable indefinately and I have a small bath full. For the pursuit of excellence Don; or just to add to stop the litter turning green, as indeed so I am informed one manufacturer has already, or perhaps because a European Directive makes them. I am of the understanding the ingredient prevents algae build-up. I along with many others simply stay well clear of the stuff; with respect though to your own success. I see quite a few clubs now bulk buy Danish Molar Clay.  (Actually works out cheaper that CL; without the toxins and whatever else is in it.)I'd be miffed if the manufacturer changed the chemical matrix within CL, and my tree died as a consequence ... or all of them even! No biggy; just saying in the hope that it might just help one person to stop using a product NOT designed for putting a plant in. |

Ok, ok, I'll take you up on this...Why on earth would they add "toxic poison" to something you let your cat walk on and pee in? Who would accept that and what would be the purpose of adding such things? If there was anything dangerous in cat litter, they would have to label it as such, just as they must with household cleaners - you would have to recycle it differently etc. Lastly, my Dutch version of Sophisticat Pink (marked Tom Puss "All gone") states on the side of the bag that it is a natural product that can be recycled in the garden as a soil improver. |
