A replacement tree!

Post subject:  A replacement tree!
Hi, I have been given a new elm by way of an apology,although it is very much bigger than the one that is deaths door.

I belileve it needs repotting but im not sure if it is the right time to do this as there are quite a few new tiny leves opening?

I aplogise if i had done anything wrong in my other post? :?

If anyone can advise me on re potting i would be very greatful.

Spring time or there's abouts. I would have thought this month would be okay if rootbound.

If it has tiny leaves, it has probably been indoors???

If you intend to keep it indoors then you can re pot. Do you have a picture of the tree as well as what it is potted in and we may be able to help you further

I have repotted elms in the middle of summer and they haven't missed a beat. I don't think you will have any trouble now.

I would do it now. Just remove it from the pot, get rid of most of the soil around the roots and repot it in Tesco lightweight cat litter and i'm sure it will be fine

I purchased a small BandQ Chinese Elm today in full leaf (Albeit half shrivelled). I brought it back and re potted straight away. The soil was terrible and the roots were a birds nest.

At least i have something to look after while the pepper is doing something !
I was nice for them to buy me a replacement.
Was a bit awkward when i was asked what had happend to them !

Would appreicate your thoughts .

The soil is awful. If you look it is very dense and compact, which means there is hardly any air space, and it will neither soak up water easily, or drain easily.

Something with much more of an open structure is far better. Compost with lots of grit, or molar clay, etc.

Would repot in to the new pot (I have one of those too :smallthumb: ) with fresh soil with plenty of water and light taking a look at those roots and trimming if required (only if the tree is in good health)

After about a month in its new pot, start feeding it, dont feed it until those roots have had time to recover if you've trimmed them or if the tree is in poor health.

I personally would give the tree some time to recover in its new home, let it show its true colours before thinking about anything else. I just think it needs some time. Its got some new growth appearing which is a good sign and they are tough, even mine are doing okay.
