I opened my April copy of the RHS 'Garden' magazine to find this headline in pole position. Apparently, the citrus longhorn beetle Anoplophora chinensis has recently been found in parks and gardens in the Netherlands (Jerry...). Its favourite food is Acer palmatum. "The Dutch Plant Protection Service has now destroyed all deciduous trees within 100m of a find in Boskoop....The beetle could be potentially devastating in gardens." That was earlier in the year - I believe they've since reported that the particular nursery involved was subsequently found to be clean and no further signs of the beetle were found. |

Quote from the Defra site quoted by Newfuschialover: "Typically, such trees are imported to the UK from the Far East. The Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) is particularly susceptible to the beetle, which can be imported as a larva undetected within the stem." As about 18 months have gone by from my original post to this new sighting, it seems clear that this can happen now and then - anyone with a recently purchased A. palmatum should be very vigilant.
