OK, so apart from the obvious correct care & conditions, should I be carrying out routine preventative regimes to avoid issues? I'm thinking things like anti-fungicide (not on pines?), Insecticides (general or species specific), other health washes etc. If so, how often, what times of year etc etc. I'm guessing there's no definitive answers, as one size does not fit all but what do you guy & gals do? Hopefully you can give me some food for though to ponder over. Thanks in advance |

I don't like using the big chemical club. I like prevention, like spraying with dilute jin seal before the trees go into the wintering shed and once before they wake up. For the occasional aphid I use some bio-degradable stuff or I find some ladybugs. Weak plants require more vigilance then healthy ones. All my trees have been inoculated with Mycorrhiza spores. |

Mycorrhiza spores was definitely worth a google, cheers Arihato . Amazing what's happening in the soil. |

I just use Tumble-bug on species which are prone to Aphids, and also a dose of Anti-Vine Weevil juice (especially on Junipers). |

Thanks for the reply Arihato. I definitely prefer to avoid strong chemicals where possible, which which is why my post asks about healthcare regimes as preventative measures... then I uses fungicides & insecticides as examples of what I was asking I used Mycorrhiza spores this year for the first time; should/can they also be used on decidious species or is it purely for pines? When you say 'jin seal' do you mean lime sulpher? What does this protect againsts?

Is the Vine Weevil stuff systemic or does it just zap any that are lurking? And are they really that common a problem? I don't know that I've ever had a problem with them, Bonsai or otherwise

Myself use now Invigorator Bug Killer and Fungicide its one of the environmentally friendly pesticides. It works really well and controls a wide range of pest species like Whitefly, Aphid, Spider Mite, Mealybug, Scale and Psyllids etc.Its non toxic and safe to use around children and pets and a big plus safe on food crops.Plus its growth stimulant and helps prevent chlorosis and improves leaf colour and vigor got mine off Ebay. |

It is the Provado I have been using. I will check the label later. I wouldnt say it is 100% effective though, as one of my young Junipers died off over winter. When I examined the root ball there were 2 Vine weevil grubs just about to turn into adults. |

This is probably not along the lines you are thinking but I grow venus fly traps, sundew plants and upright pitcher plants in pots amongst my trees. If nothing else it is very interesting and great fun (I'm easily entertained I'm waiting for the weather to warm up at the moment, they've not properly come out of dormancy yet......hopefully soon. |

The Provado vine weevil stuff only works systemically according to Lee V, so needs to be used during the growing season so the tree absorbs it. He said it doesn't harm them on contact, only if they ingest it. |
