Hi guys, I'm new to the site although not entiely new to bonsai but I do have a problem I could do with some help with I have two white pine saplings that I ordered, theyre cheap and cheerful and havnt been styled (I just wanted some white pines lol). The problem is that theyve been in tiny pots for about a year now (pots are the same size as a coke can) and im worried about how root bound and waterlogged theyre getting. I really want to get them into some well drained soil but I know it should wait until autumn... would it be safe to just plant them in a bigger pot without disturbing the roots? Thanks, Mike |

Sure, if you are careful and they would benefit greatly. |

yeah you will be fine, you could even put them in pond baskets, put your substrate into the pot etc first then gently take the tree out without disturbing the soil there in then fill around them |

I would go ahead. Pine do not like water logged roots. They will greatly appreciate the better drainage. |

I would still do a Pine repot. Your avatar space doesn't say where you are based, so I really can't judge your weather situation. But this time of year is okay to do a Pine repot and get rid of the bad soil. If the soil in the old pot is still free draining, do as mytree suggests. If the soil is not free draining do a total repot and pot in a free draining potting mix. Putting them in pond baskets is best, a large container is also good. |
