It has sadly been just left alone and has probably been in the pot for ages. it is supposed to be over 25 years old. |

These larch seem to shed a branch for no real reason, my small one has lost several probably due to weather. I also remove the cones as they do take a lot of the goodness from the branches and I have known them kill of a branch as they take the goodness. Don is right shorten the dead branches but leave a stub as you may wish to jin it later. Once you have cut it back than you can see what you have to work with and may be able to see how you want to style it. Probably pulling branches down to fill negative space. As to your question I use several packages depending on what I want to do....the main one is Paint Shop Pro. |

Thanks guys, Don, the branches are dead, I scraped the bark on the bare branches and there is no green at all. Paul, there were loads of cones on the dead branches and a lot less on the live branches so that may well be the reason they died, I think I will remove the rest of the cones and the dead branches. I have paint shop pro suite and will give it atry when I see what I have to work with, cheers. |

This tree is mature, it has been neglected but has a nice airy feel like the pine trees in southern France. Larch will drop branches when they are not happy, which is a bad habit if you grow ShoHin. That can be minimised by free drainage, increase the amount of food and a sacrificial branch from time to time. It is not often you see a Larch trained as Hokidachi (broom). |

I really think this should be repotted now if it is possible, but should I put it into a larger pot without disturbing the roots or do a full normal repot? |

Yes pot it in a bigger pot/basket without disturbing the roots. How bad is the soil? You could also put it in the ground for this year, without disturbing the roots. |

Im out at the moment but when i watered it yesterday the water came out of the bottom of the pot quite quickly, it also has a lot of weeds in the pot. I have just picked up a larger pond basket. |
