The hedge between ourselves and our neighbours is over 50 years old (planted 1957) and is about 4ft high.

I would like to take to some material off it if possible but I appear to have two problems....

I have no idea what to look for in terms of material... and I don't know what to do with it if I find it!

I'll struggle to provide pictures that will make any sense but there is a mass solid branches of all sorts of twisty or straight stuff in the lower three quarters and the top foot is a dense matted layer of regularly trimmed thinner branches.

Anyone any tips on where to start? Will privet cuttings root very well or is air layering the best way to go?

Can you not dig one up no?

Aha yes yellow, if only it reflected my knowledge... In terms on colour progression I reckon I am more 'off-white'...!

I can't dig any of it up really - but will be able to one day when the lady that lives next door moves out...

My only option is cutting or air layering... I might just try anything just to see what works. Not the prettiest of species but it'll be good practice...

What about a layering? Most species will take and it is about the right time to try. The advantage is that you can select a branch that is thick and interesting (In theory).

Also, keep an eye open for any skips. These Privets are thought of as weeds by many folk and often chucked out.

Easiest of tree's to air layer, go for it Daniel, you'll be taking them of by the end of july beginning of august.

Ooh easy to layer you say! I'll give it a go then! Just need to find a branch that I think will work as a bonsai...

Thanks for your help! :-)
