Title stand for Japanise white pain in the a**

I'm about to kill my second making it a 100% failure rate! I've done nothing to it, it gets tonnes of sun shine. The needles started turning brown, I thought it was possibly too wet. Now it's alot drier it continues to deteriorate. It's fed maticulously! Should I give up on JWPs? I love them but I'm failing miserably

I'm no expert, but they dont like a shed load of food, maybe a couple of rape seed cakes, or sprinkle some Naruko on the surface, in Japan I saw they dont feed at all till early autumn to reduce needle length, but your problem is they keep dying? mine have free draining soil, and when I repot use rootgrow if there isnt enough of that white symbiotic fungas which is VERY Good for the tree. pesonally keep mine on the dry side, of course not completely dry more moist, water when needed and lots of sun. Not much candle pinching, only in strong areas, leave ten days then middle areas, leave weak areas, November do the same to needle, cut with scissors rather than pinch (doesnt harm tree as much) But Like I said I'm no expert, theres a lot more people on here who know a lot more. Used about 30% akadama 20% Kitty. 10% fine compost bark, 10% old soil, 20% Kryu maybe 10% JI no2?

No candles have came out this year! It's a tree that was styled and potted by John armitage, it was well established so the fault lays squarely at my feet! So frustrating

Japanese white Pine are not the easiest of species. Well Pines on the whole are a moody lot, I have lost a few in my years of Bonsai. They have a very primitive root system, that causes the majority of problems. Mycorhyza is a must.
The fact that is is an established tree doesn't say that therefore it should stay alive. The change of environment can be what does them in.

Maybe stay away from them for the next couple of years (decades?).
Or get your hands on some local Pines, cheap ones and get a proper feel for them. Maybe it is a species that you don't relate to, I know it sounds crazy, but for me there are some trees I can't get any rapport with like Zelkova, Ginkgo.

Gary, is this the little tree that you bought at the Swindon show?

I can't help, I'm afraid - I know nothing about pines of any kind.

Gary - my JWP needles went all golden yellow last year, and produced no candles worth speaking of, but it seems to be back to health this year, much darker green needles, lovely abundance of purple male cones, good candles. It seems it's back to health but I've no idea why - I just watered it and fed it and waited. I encourage you keep going, matey, and good luck with it. They are such pretty trees - worth fighting for.

J.

That's a shame - it was (is?) a nice little tree. Sounds as if a bit of neglect might be good for it. Stop feeding and water sparingly and see how it goes. It might come back.
