I have just recently in the last couple of days put 10 air layers on some big red flowering hawthorn just wondering how long can they stay on for over winter ect or have they got to be cut this year.

I would leave it until October-ish and remove the air layered plant unless the roots must sustain a large tree! Alot of it depends upon how well the roots have developed. If its nt strong enough I'd leave it till next autumn, maybe move the tree into a greenhouse over winter to protect the roots from freezing?

A quite lengthy discussion on here a few weeks ago started by me wanting a red flowering hawthorn revealed that success at airlayering and starting from cuttings is very hit and miss. Almost without exception, red hawthorn are created by grafting onto a stronger rootstock which suggests to me that the red cultivar does not make a root system vigorous enough to sustain a tree.
Hope you have some success. Let us know. :smallthumb:

Yes gwen i have grafted a few aswell thought i would give it a go after seeing your post. Some of the grafts have worked others failed av jus put one up in the (show of yours) bit. I see how i get on with the air layers maybe a couple out of the ten might just take.

Ah I ddnt realise the tree was too big to bring indoors :07hysterical: you could try bubble wrapping it in the autumn for protection? what I have done on a maple im air layering is build a polyestyrene box around the air layer, this way I can leave it there for a long time and the polystyrene and extra soil will help keep it warm.

That seems an awful long time. I did an air layer in March and its being chopped next month

On the subject on Air layerings, I have couple on the go at the moment, and I will inspect the bubble wrap regularly for signs of rooting.

On thing I didnt do, though, was cover them in black plastic. Who does this, and why?

Ta.

I was once told that it was best to keep the new roots in the dark rather than expose them to daylight which, even with bubblewrap, still gets through.

Hi

I wrap them in clear polythene, tied tightly so moisture cannot escape, then cover in black polythene.

you can then remove the black polythene to check progress without disturbing the embryo roots.

I use spaggy moss BTW
