Obviously digging up/repotting/root pruning etc needs to be done during a trees dormant period, but what about cutting back the top of the tree? Can this be done any time or is it again best to leave it until the tree is dormant?

What sort of tree are you on about and do you have a photo???

Entirely depends on the species, how healthy it is, if you are wanting refinement or larger size, etc.

But in general, yes, trimming of foliage is done throughout the growing season. What kind of tree did you say it was?

I was just after a general answer. If I were to buy a sapling oak tree and I wanted to reduce its height. Is now a good time or do I have to wait till spring. Just a hypothetical question to find out more info. Thanks

Remember - A tree only has 6 months or less to grow in a year, in which to put out all its leaves and new growth which will lead to strengthening, nebari formation and trunk thickening. Oaks in fact push out 2 flushes of growth, one now, then one after a mid summer break. If you were to prune now it wouldn't harm the tree, but it would likely set back its natural growth pattern. The more foliage and growth you leave on now the better. There really is nothing to be gained from pruning a young tree now. It is only Bonsai that have reached the desired size that are trimmed to shape.

I, personally, would wait until spring. However, it depends on the tree. I would probably just let it grow unchecked for several seasons and then reduce the height.

Okay, so further to this I have now purchased some albums glutinosa which are about 40/50cms tall. They are to all intents and purposes a stick. No branches to speak of and quite straight. At the very bottom, they are about 8mm in diameter at the most and have a slight taper to the top. For me, they are too tall and lack branches. Will cutting them off at my desired height be detrimental to the tree? Will doing so get some branch growth to start?

No and Yes.
Your desired height, do you mean the size that the final Bonsai will be.?
Leaves the question what do you want with the trees?
Do you want ShoHin or bigger?

Your questions give raise to more questions................

BTW you probably mean Alnus and you spell checker got in there first.....

I did actually write alnus, but my silly phone corrected it!! Yes, a shohin size. Except the trunk is very thin and I also thought that cutting the top would promote more growth in the trunk as well as putting out branches. Is this acceptable to do now?

Okay, Alnus, not easy to get the leafs small, great grower, doesn't mind root pruning.

For ShoHin, look for the lowest bud or the lowest bud above the last branch, count four (4) buds up and cut.
If it has no branches count 6 buds up.
This takes acre of the inhibitor hormone from the top meristem, now the lower buds will produce new shoots.
The tree needs to be planted into free draining soil, Cat litter and grit or Akadama and grit. Dust all sieved out.

The best id to put it in a pond basket or a big growing box or pot.

Hope this helps you along, have fun

Great, thanks. Why the need to count those numbers specifically? Does counting up those numbers of buds apply to just alnus or could that be done for other species?
