I have a large European Hornbeam which, for at least the second year running is developing brown tips on the leaves. If it carries on, as it has previously, it just ruins the look of the tree. I have taken some pix but not downloaded them but you all know what a hornbeam leaf looks like - well just imagine the very tip is brown. It's always fed regularly; this year I have increased the watering and is in shade from about 2.00 pm onwards although I have now moved it into a corner of the garden where it will receive almost no direct sunlight. Any ideas guys and gals? It is very well covered with leaves and I could cut off the brown tipped ones without too much effect. |

Well Gwen when the leave edges turn brown its could be tree stress related.Roots could be damaged, not getting enough water, it could be many things.Like salt in the water over fertilizing while brown leaf tips and brown edges on leaves can be alarming, its not always very bad and normally can be fixed quite easy with TLC. |

If it does it the second year in a row, you will have to look at the roots, place it is standing. I believe hornbeams need full sun, atleast mine are in the full sun next to the Pines. You changed a number of things, but as in darkroom work when you change more then one thing you don't know what is causing the effect of the change. It is a difficult diagnosis, brown leaf tips could mean too much water as well as too little. Sorry Gwen this is as far as my expertise goes.

It was repotted last (not this) Spring in a very open mix. I have had the tree for about seven years but don't remember it doing this in previous years. My garden faces Southeast without any buildings to shield it from the moment the sun clears the horizon. Because I like to keep the pouring rain off some trees, it has been under a perspex 'roof' which is several feet above its head. There is the possibility that at midday the perspex may have exaggerated the heat when the sun is at its highest. Clutching at straws here. The tree is positively rude with health. The canopy is so dense that I have had to seriously thin out the apex because no light was getting to the inner foliage. It's fed fornightly with everything else. I think it is environmental rather than tree health related. One or two leaves are lighter in colour in parts as though the sun has bleached a little of the green out. Too subtle to show up on pictures 'though. I have another hornbeam which (I think) browned last year but so far is OK. My garden is very sheltered in this hot weather with no relief from the scorching sun for most of the day. I noticed some of my trees (under some net shading) were in 30C heat yesterday. In the absence of an explanation, I'll see if the move to a part of the garden which is (relatively) a little more shaded has any improved effect. Thanks guys. All suggestions welcome. |

What are you feeding Gwen and what is the soil made up from. Also did you put back a percentage of the old soil when you repotted and did you wash the root's. Molly |

Hi Molly - no I did not wash the roots. I feed every fortnight with alternating seaweed concentrate and an ordinary balanced general liquid fertiliser. I can't remember precise proportions for the media but I think it would have been Tesco CL, pumice and probably composted bark which is my mix (in varying proportions) for most trees. The hornbeam raft that I have pictured on another thread had a certain amount of the same problem last year. At that time the raft had not been repotted since I bought it so was in a different mix to the upright hornbeam. The raft was repotted this year and at the present time is showing no sign of browning so they are both now in a similar mix. I'll put some pix on flickr and show the link here. |

My big one had a bit of this last year, it was re potted this year so I haven't fed too well yet, at the moment it is fine.... or maybe just lucky. I did read sometime ago that they like the shade and not too much heat, but all of mine are in full sun????? Strange this bonsai lark isn't it |
