I am sure this could have been covered time and time again, but you know.. it's something that no one ever really answers directly, I know it is dependent on the environment the tree is and the tree itself, I tend to wake up at 7 in the morning, water and mist my tree, nothing during the day as I am told this does not really do much for the tree and misting would result in burnt leaves, when the sun goes down again, I mist once before bed and check the water and water if needed. Would this be over misting/watering?

Yes and no, well maybe.............. If your tree is allowed to dry a bit in between it is okay. I don't mean bone dry, I mean the top cm of soil is dry then water.

Misting increases the moisture in the air directly around the tree, very nice in the morning, and it washes the leafs. Watering in the morning is best. But if the tree is not dry in the evening I would not water it again. If on the other hand the tree is dry in the afternoon it will need water, no matter what time (trees can't tell time).
This rhythm of wet - dry is important for the bacterial and fungal life in the pot.

The only thing with over misting is that if trees are kept close together without really good air circulation this can give rise to fungal diseases (mildew, etc.). Providing you are watering correctly and the roots are working, there should be little need to mist.

[misting would result in burnt leaves] Among many others, I have proved that this statement is a myth. Misting does no harm although it is most useful for delicate trees which have to be kept inside during our cold months. Your regime doesn't seem to be flawed at all but water when needed rather than by the clock.

That's very interesting Don i don't mist when the sun is high because i fear burnt leaves. So you are saying that it is ok to do so??

Thanks for the answer, I just thought misting wouldn't really benefit too much for the type of bonsai I have but seemed it wouldn't harm it so why not? I did read watering in the morning is the best as watering during the afternoon does not really do much. I only water at night a little to wet it as it is incredibly hot at the moment, thought it might appreciate a little evening water. It's just enough to give the top-soil a little kiss.

You wait till my next task, I need to prune my baby, first time ever so i'll wait till I have a picture for all of you wonderful people!

Back of the net :hatoff: Seriously 'though, a 'drop' of water at night is not a general rule of thumb for bonsai. It's not too bad at the moment because it is still hot at night, but bonsai appreciate being allowed to dry out a little more, so that a thorough watering drags fresh oxygen down through the roots which is essential for their health. This is all tied in with open potting media (another essential). Most (but not all) trees do not appreciate being on the damp side all the time.
Flag up if you don't know about 'open media'.

ahh thanks for the heads up, give him a bit of a rest in the night, then give him some water in the morning, and regulate throughout the day it's a little difficult being at work for long hours! I go for quite a large water in the morning, I will just have to see how it goes over the next few weeks.

The only time I ever mist is when my ficuses get a dust layer accumulation on the leaves with my indoor set up. I basically only do so to clean up the dust layer.
