A friend of mine has a large garden and was thinking of putting a rockery in the corner but instead of the usual plants she was thinking of bonsai trees to make it look like a mini mountain. Has anyone tried this?

There is a famous Japanese guy that does this, but on a grand scale. He employs 30 gardeners.

The problem would be to maintain the Bonsai as Bonsai, you would have to be able to reach all the trees. Besides if you were to plant them out, as not in pot, they would revert to 'normal' very quickly.
I think he'd be better off shaping some real dwarf varieties and plant those out

As Arihato says trees that had been cultivated as bonsai would soon grow bigger if planted into a rockery; strictly speaking, once they are planted in the ground, they are no longer bonsai (translation being tree in a tray or pot).
It's a nice idea but there would be a lot of practicalities to work out.

I suppose if they were put into small ordinary pots and then inserted into the rockery so that the pots were hidden it should be ok, that way you could lift them every so often to see to them.

If you visit a model village you will see lots of small trees in the landscapes. Not sure if they keep the roots contained in pots but they all look pruned to shape (but not just topiary lollipops) The model village that I know best is Bekonscot in Berkshire. Have a look here for inspiration
