Hi, Just a hypothetical question as there's a young ish conker tree in my mums garden and I was thinking about taking a young branch next year. Could I start to train the branch I want to take as cutting next year now with wire to get the shape I want or would this be impractical or simply not worth it? Any advice would be appreciated |

In principle, it is feasible but you could waste a lot of time and potentially wire, if ultimately your cuttting (or airlayer) does not work. I don't know about horse chestnut from cuttings. All mine are from conkers or from offshoots from the roots of a parent bonsai. |

I didn't think conkers were very good for bonsai because of the size of the leaves |

Don - I'll go and take a pic of the leaves on mine. They are smaller than the palm area of my quite small hands. |

Here's the link to pix of my horse chestnut. 30 years old from a conker in a neighbour's garden. By no means a good bonsai but for much of its life I didn't know what to do with it but I would never let it go. It's the tree I've had the longest. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mapotter/s ... 917591672/ Leaves small enough ? |

Are these small enough? Attachment: CRW_7821A.jpg or these? Attachment: CRW_7822A.jpg But it is true Chestnut is not an easy tree to Bonsai Sorry didn't answer the question; is it useful to train a branch before making a cutting. I would say yes, I do it before I make an airlayer. Sometimes I even train a branch to become a future jin. |

I agree they can be smallish, this is mine that i have just this minute taken but it still has to be a bigish tree to look like a mini conker tree (in my opinion anyway) |

Thanks for the replies Sorry if I sound stupid but what is the difference between a cutting and an airlayer? |

A cutting is where you chop the branch off and put into a pot hoping that it will root. An air layer is keeping it on the existing tree while it grows roots and then chopping it off and potting it. Thats a very basic explanation. |
