I collected this last year along with a beech from an area with loads of beech saplings and I thought it was a beech but it doesn't look like it, any idea what it is?

Agree - shoots look like beech but leaves don't. ::dunno:

Leafs of beech on a tree that is stressed or was stressed will look misshapen.
But that is definitely a Fagus sylvatica.

I would say its an unhappy beech. Those leaf buds are very characteristic of beech. Maybe didn't manage to grow enough root after the collection last year.

Thanks, it's just getting left for a couple of years anyway so hopefully it will recover if it is stress, which I think it is now.
I could sing to it to release the stress but that would probably finish it off. ::lol:

I have seen funny leaves like this on Beech hegdes. Its usually the second flush of leaves after midsummer, which arent as vigorous as the first in spring.

Could it be a Lime, I have one similar which I think is a Lime. Just a guess.

the dead looking branch has the normal look of a dead beech branch. That is the colour and surface roughness

Keefy - definitely not lime. Lime leaves are heart shaped with a pronounced tip and an asymmetric base, and not shiny, and the trunk bark isn't beechy-smooth like the one in the pics.

I'd say beech too - the leaves are just like the distorted ones I got last year. This year's came out fine but are slowly giving up to the heat, despite copious watering. J.
