Of course anyone here is told to put a 'stick in a pot' in the ground or more so recently in a pond basket (mainly thanks to Arihato) but what is actually better, even if both have the same growing medium, fertiliser and water, although in the ground they would be watered less. Which would actually create the 'quickest' or most productive system. I have some land available to me to plant in and wondered which would genuinely be most productive. Outlining bonuses to pond baskets to me would be, ease of movement - can be moved to allow even sunning (like our trees turned on benches) and also for styling, can be taken away to workshops or to a bench or to show someone. Also can be easily traded/swapped easily and no transplant/collecting risk. Roots are easier to inspect/ repot. Any other bonuses please mention or any other varied growing techniques. I intended to have this a point of reference aswell for anyone wanting to grow from 'scratch' Thank you. Gonna be a heated discussion :) with a lot of all of them :)Let's go! |

Airpot's ( not pond basket's ) if used correctly can get amazing result's in a short time but as I have mentioned, there's a right and a wrong way to use them. They are great if you don't have a large garden, if you do then I would plant straight into the ground, down side is you will have to undercut the root's every couple of year's which can set the tree back a little as far as growth is concerned. Yet air pots are extremely over priced in comparison to pond baskets. You would say if you can plant in the ground regardless of other methods Molly? |

I saw in Japan a tree being put in the ground but on a piece of plastic so no roots could grow immediately down. I use pond baskets for ease of use and economy of space. Potting up in a bigger basket is easy. Just dump the smaller one into the bigger one and fill in with soil. Also the big advantage is you can feed insane amounts or is it W. Pall amounts. |

I thought about the weed sheeting to stop roots growing down, it is also permeable, but slowly. |

I forget how much airpot's cost, you see I get them for a couple of quid. In the ground is the second best method, it really depend's how large you want to grow the tree ?, pond basket's are ok for growing shohin or chuhin, unless you can find massive pond basket's and if you do then these will prabably cost as much as an airpot. Can I ask how you can get the pots for a couple of quid? :) (dodgy back of a van like! Haha) Big :) The smallest being a foot and maybe some big hornbeams, junipers and maples (maybe pushing 3-4 ft with hornbeams, but definitely the ground for it) I can get big pond baskets but hasn't thought about the price. I'll ask if he can remember :) |

The biggest pond basket I use is 40x40 cm. I cut it down to 20cm high. They cost about € 2. maybe a little more if you only buy one. |

Just had a brain wave! What about washing/laundry baskets? Small hole ones or if not you could line them with mesh? |

I get them from a good friend of the club who grow's tree's by the thousand's every year. The principal of growing tree's in any airpot or pond basket only work's if you increase the size of pot as the tree grow's, the benefit's only work when the root's hit the air, so putting a small tree in a large pot defeat's the object, upsizing the pot as the tree grow's is the trick to fast growth. This is where airpot's have the advantage, they can be cut to size and are virtually indestructable, they can be removed easily ready for the next sized pot and can be used over and over again, unlike pond basket's that are degraded by u.v light and usually start cracking and breaking up after a few year's. Growing tree's in pond basket's and airpot's isn't a new idea, it's been out there for a lot of year's but it isn't a magic wand, unless you still give the tree every thing it need's to flourish the result's will be negligible, so good horticultural practise's have to go hand in hand with these aswell.
