Post subject:  Hornbeam sapling still not in leaf - late May !

Hello All

I have a 1 foot tall European hornbeam now in a training pot. Back in March the buds swelled and came through with tiny leaves in two or three places
The cold London April and wet May seem to have sent the little tree back in to dormancy either through drowning or cold or both

Despite some very warm weather this last week coupled with careful, regular watering, shade and full hot sun, fresh soil .general TLC !!...some buds are producing v v small half fingernail sized leaves with no real urgency or other breaking buds elsewhere on the trunk and many whippy little branches

The tree is certainly alive so any ideas would be gratefully received. I havent yet pruned the sapling this year.
Perhaps I am being impatient to imagine a few days of v warm weather should kick start a flourish of breaking buds ?!
Should I be watering or feeding it more ? Perhaps it just had too much rain at the end of April ? Also is full sun also a bad idea if it is struggling to bud ?

Thanks v much for your guidance

Bill

I would just give it time to do it's thing in it's own time.

TWO years ago I cut off two Laburnum seedlings, probably in the wrong season (their opinion). I thought I left enough buds to shoot from.................
They sat there for two seasons, now finally one has leaved out, the other one is still sulking. It is green, I check from time to time, but still no leafs........

I'm hoping the other one will wake up next year. ::dunno:

I lost 6 hornbeams in training this year :(
Think they got to hot in the greenhouse then froze. It seemed to dry the slightly open buds out them froze them crispy.
