It is a Pine Don, probably Pinus sylvestris or mugo. You can treat them like any other two needle Pine. I would let the bottom branches grow freely for some years to get some taper. |

I would guess Scots, on account of the bluey-green needles (although difficult to tell). Possibly the finest Pine to use for Bonsai, although there are numerous cultivars around which may be slower growing. However, on your tree the candles are quite long which is good as it shows the tree is vigorous and will grow quickly. DO NOT throw onto compost heap. Basically 3 options: 1) Start fashioning into a Shohin Bonsai right away, which will mean pinching out candles and possibly wiring. 2) Aim for a bigger tree, which would involve allowing growth unchecked for several seasons to bulk up the tree. Best in a bigger pot or even the open ground. 3) The Arahito method which allow growth of long bottom branches whilst keeping the top in check. This allows the trunk to thicken whilst keeping the tree short. |

I'll put it into a bigger pot and leave it for a while and see what happens |

Agree with the others, it looks destined for the pond basket. |

I also think that its a Mugo and that in its present state that theres not a lot that can be done with it I have had similar one. Rather than chucking it on to the compost heap I thought that I may as well play around with it , I went for something like this and actuallty a couple of years on its begining to look a little better. |

Thanks. I'll still put it into a bigger pot but see exactly what is beneath the soil |
