It could just be the recent hot weather. My Palmatums have some scraggy looking leaves at the moment. You can clip out the bad ones if it bothers you. |

Taking it that there are no obvious pests sucking the life out of the tree, it could well be scorch, wind/sun both contribute. Move somewhere sheltered, ensure plenty of water and as Nick says cut off the crispy leaves. It's not long till a full defoliation should be possible (mid-end June.) that will give you new foliage to make the tree look better till leaf fall in the Autumn. |

Mine is suffering wind burn. That may be all it is. Just keep it very wet and out of wind |

First question: is the new growth healthy? I saw some in the picture that looked good. If the new (baby) growth is doing well then it is likely windburn. If the new is not doing well you have a root problem. Always allow the tree to dry between waterings, it is essential for the micro organisms. |

Firstly, thankyou Steve, NickB, Talltrees, gwozzy and arihato for answering and offering advice. I will move it to a sheltered position and see how things progress. There are no obvious pests and the new growth seems to be healthy. Do we know why this seems to effect maples? Is it just the delicate nature of the leaves? Just wondering as i thought it was something more sinister due to nothing around it being effected. Again, Thanks Lads |

I have two maples, My Sango Kaku is on the middle shelf, dappled sun and out of the wind, my Kashima ( I think ) is on the front of the same shelf, full sun, head on wind. The difference is unbelievable, the Sango is growing perfect, the Kashima has scorched all over. The Kashima is up for a major chop so its no bother but as a test it totally proves the practice of keeping maples slightly shaded. |

I've got the same on Tridents in pots, whilst Tridents in the ground do not exhibit this. Both get the same amount of sun and wind...hmmm. So what's different: - the type of soil - the amount of water - the heat of the roots due to the pot. Anyone have any theories? |
