| Post subject: | My First Tree |
So i got my first tree today from a bonsai store i found in manchester city center! its a chinese elm, about 4-5 years. I was wondering, i bought some SP cat litter, but i dont know whether to repot it? it seems to be planted in a fairly fine compost with a gravel top layer. I think he said he changed the pot recently but it doesnt really look like he did much. Shall i re pot it in SP? Cheers |

Hi By the looks of those roots it needs repotting. Check the 'how to's' on is site and the pot is a standard pot that they mainly come in. the tree itself looks ok and could benefit from a better pot. |

Do you have access to any bigger pots? The pot it's in now is pretty damned small - it's the smallest size Chinese Elm they import. Problem with these is that unless you're on the ball they can dry out in no time - a bigger pot would be safer... |

You need to put some mesh over the drainage hole(s). Got the old soil off and comb out the roots before pruning the roots a little. Take no more than say 25% off. I take more but my trees are developed for longer and I know what I'm doing. Here are some photos of the process with Cat Litter... http://www.flickr.com/photos/norbury/se ... 302580515/ |
