Post subject:  Water running out -azalea

Hello all,

I noticed this morning that my supply of rainwater is running low. I live in a limey area and am worried that my azaleas will suffer if I use tap water on them. Is there anything I can do to my tap water to make it more suitable?

fill up what you store your water in with tap water. Leave it for 24 hrs. I think you can also add a LITTLE vinegar to drop the PH but not done that myself. Stymie may be able to give you better info :)

Alternatively you can nick a pair of tights, fill them with peat and put that in the water for a day or two. When I kept discus fish I used to that to get a more acidic water.

Do you use ericaceous feed on your azalea? That should help. Also i believe used teabags have an acidic ph and i have seen teabags pinned to the soil surface for watering. Personally thought, i wouldn't worry too much about it.

I am blessed with soft water here but for acid loving trees I occasionally add the tea dregs, ferrous sulphate or even urine. forgive my language. I also allow drawn water to 'age' before use but this is mainly to give it time to release the fluoride, chlorine or any other additives into the atmosphere.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Really useful.

Lots of ideas. Time to get out the litmus paper. I think I will give the urine tip a miss. Don't want the local magistrates involved again! :200unsure: :21cop:

Great Stymie! Now I know you urinate! I'm gonna have to take a break from this place for awhile...
