Post subject:  Hello from North wales

hi my names charlie i've decided to buy myself a small serissa its 7 years old and about 20cm tall, i originally brought a bonsai growing kit and then discovered that i had just paid £8 for normal tree seeds and a lump of dried soil, so i did some reasearch and brought myself a chinese elm and a serissa, my serrisa arrived today and looks cool, i brought it from heronsbonsai, when it came it had a couple of tiny bugs that were like tini snails about 3/4 mm long but black, are these just normal snails or something i should be worried about? also i have never grown anything in my life some websites say a serrisa is very hard to grow and others say its quite easy, also how much light does it need at this time of the year? its currently sitting in front of a south facing window (only window i can put it in) with my SAD countering light in front of it, is this okay?

Heyup Charlie.
Just a few days ago, another new member joined with a similar tree. You may like to see viewtopic.php?f=14&t=15710 which is her post. I think that the advice would be similar for both of you with the added precaution of not putting it anywhere near to a radiator or other source of heat in the house. Always consider snails as unwelcome and see them off. We'll be here, eager to answer any particular questions that you have and we're always keen to see a photograph of any tree under discussion. Welcome to weetrees.

Welcome to weetrees and wishing you many happy years ahead with your bonsai. I don't know much about serissa but I'd get rid of any bugs to start with. You mention a CE and that's very easy to keep especially if you keep it outside - never let it dry out completely nor get waterlogged. Research some more and feel free to ask any questions you have.

Good stuff. Unless the weather is awful where you are I'd look to put the CE outside. I'm sure it'll survive inside for some time especially with the light you've bought but I can't help feeling it'll be at it's best as nature intended. If the growth gets leggy inside that'll be the sign.
