Hello everyone
My name is Michael I’m 28 and live in Wolverhampton.
I’ve been interested in bonsai for some time now but have never plucked up the courage to get one due to fear of killing the tree. I recently purchase my first Chinese elm and hopefully all goes well fingers crossed.
I’ve also been given a tree from a friend but I’m not sure what it is so just wondered if some of you could shed some light.

Welcome. You made a good choice for your first tree as Chinese Elm are fast growers and virtually bomb proof.

Looks like it might be a white pine? It's just a guess, I don't have one of those. Pines are difficult for beginners, good luck!

Hello and welcome to weetrees.

Agree re Chinese Elm one of the best trees for bonsai there is. The other tree is a pine but they're very hard to tell apart unless you're an expert. The white pine has whitish stripes on the needles are they mature. I can't quite see if yours has those or not. Either way pines are quite specialist to bonsai well, especially in how and when to prune them. For now don't let it get water logged as they need air to the roots and keep it in full sun.
