Today I was reading how leaving the EU could impact which footballers are able to play in the UK and it got me wondering what the impact might be on Bonsai. Would a Brexit change the movement of plant material within Europe and would it impact the movement of material from the rest of the World to the UK?

I doubt it would make any difference. In many ways things would most probably be simplified. The EU loves red tape and making things as complicated as possible.

actually, is would more probably make it very much more difficult

it would be easy for DEFRA to close our borders to plant material

with the sudden oak death, ash dieback etc, they could say we are safer if we don't import any trees and plants

at the moment there is free movement of trees through Europe, this will prob end, once we are not in Europe

the industry would collapse once existing stock is sold, as we cannot suddenly grow 10,20, 30 year old trees to meet demand

So I was curious about this as I am visiting France on April 15th pondering weather to take some digging equipment & pots... Can I freely bring back material? I will be in my own vehicle? (sorry to hijack)

Thanks..

You can bring them back, but do you have permission to collect them to begin with. ?

We stay on a farm with plenty of land. Full permission to dig where and what we like (WW1) relic hunting ;)

I have an awful presentiment that we shall leave Europe - catastrophic. The Brexit voices are too loud, the 'Stay' side don't seem to have any oomph. Me, I want to stay - but for my declining years I'm almost certainly going to be stuck in the UK watching us slowly realising what a terrible mistake we've made. Then Scotland leaves... Then Trump gets elected... Then Putin starts shouting about his investments... Oh well... It's being optimistic that keeps me so cheerful.

The most fundamental law in economics is supply and demand. The UK tends to be on the demand side for bonsai. I think we'll be allright.

The same will hold true for all the other stuff we tend to buy from the EU.

What we supply (mostly financial, legal and banking and related services) they can't get from too many other places, but they will try. And we'll suffer for a while.

But that should not affect your bonsai habit too much.

Political sovereignty is too important to sacrifice for the sake of cheaper bonsai for 5 - 10 years. Especially as the trees will live for many lifetimes.
