Writing this from Herons Bonsai, popped over to uk for a couple of days for work. Wow what a spectacular collection of magnificent bonsai. I have decided to remortgage my house and sell my limbs so I can buy some of the lovely trees here. Not really. Couldn't take them back with me! I'll upload some photos later. |

Thanks Drew, unfortunately didn't get the time on this visit, I had to go straight fron Herons to Gatwick for my flight. I'll drop in on my next visit. |

I had some good chats with Peter, I used to live in East Grinstead about 5 miles from Herons nursery but moved away in 1987. He opened the nursery one year earlier in 1986... I never knew. I told him I was looking for English oaks but you can't get hold of them in Spain. So he dug out two English oak shoots, I would guess 3 years old  English oak shoot by Dave, on FlickrThis one is about 1cm diameter at the base, there is already some good taper but unfortunately I see a bit of inverse taper there too. I wonder if I need to deal with that now or will it naturally grow out as the trunk fattens in the ground. At minimum I guess I should remove those branch shoots that emerge from the lump.  English oak shoot by Dave, on FlickrThen I mentioned I'm also a fan of Zelkova serrata, And he found this pretty little Zelkova, amazing because he said it's already about 10 years old and he has been intentionally keeping them tiny. Very kind of Peter, he insisted I take this one for free.  Zelkova exposed root mame by Dave, on FlickrVery happy because I now have my first exposed rooter... I'll put it in a mame pot in spring, then keep it well trimmed to keep the branches and leaves tight and compact. I also collected about 10 acorns from the massive oak at the front of the nursery. Had to stuff all these new acquisitions into my small suitcase because they won't let you take plants with soil as hand luggage.
