Hi,

What are the reasons why fully glazed pots (outside and inside) are not appropriate post for bonsais or gardening in general?

Hi

Glaze on the inside won't absorb water and keep the roots cool.

Also it is a waste of glaze as no-one will see it!

The inside is not glazed for root care and they fine it easier to grip to the rough clay so firm themselves in the pot and helps with the root growth

Keith & Paul, is this why pine pots tend to have no glaze, to allow better cooling or is it just asthetics ???

A bit of both, the ceramics warm up quicker with no glaze, which is what the pine roots like

Thank you for the explanations. I knew that there wasn’t any bonsai pot around fully glazed but I wasn’t too sure why.

I recently inherited a load of nice old fully glazed (inside and outside) pots/trays without drain holes, which my Gran was using as drip trays in her greenhouse .These are ideal sizes and colours for Mame, so after carefully drilling out holes in them I planted them with a selection of Crassula sarcocaulis , Portulacea etc .
What Ive found is that the compost in fully glazed pots certainly retains water much more than unglazed, but its whether this is detrimental to plant growth in such small pots or not its too early to say......

Interesting Betula. I have recently seen a 30cm pot fully glazed. One big hole in the middle and several tiny holes (for wires ?) elsewhere. The pot is superb. But I wasn’t sure if it could be used at all...
