...halfway up the tree?

I had always assumed that when people talked about being careful to not let the root stock of a grafted tree take over we were talking about shoots growing from below the graft and eventually becoming dominant?

My folks have this butterfly maple in their garden - just a supermarket purchase a few years ago - which has absolutely flown. But visiting this weekend it looked mostly standard Japanese maple from the front. Tracing back, I’ve drawn the red line where the root stock first appears from the trunk.

Obviously, and completely altruistically, I’ve told mum I’ll sort it for her with an air layer in the spring :)

Are you saying it's grown some standard maple above the graft? They can do this from time to time - I'm not too sure of the horticultural / genetic reasons but it happens. I suspect meristematic cells get dislodged from the root stock and travel up in the trunk and branches until they settle and start to divide. I think you just need to prune it all off - perhaps after an air-layer as you suggest.

I have a Maple that is doing just that. Both branches are above the graft and one has small tricoloured leaves and the other slightly larger green. Ironically its the only green maple I have........

Thanks chaps, thought we were going to have to donate it for scientific research for a moment there.
