Hi everyone have you all protected your trees from this harsh weather?
I am getting concerned as all mine are frozen solid including all the pots in my greenhouse .
Do you think we will have many losses?

I've left mine on the benches the first few nights and then moved to the floor. But like yours, pots are completely frozen. It's the first time since I started bonsai that I've seen freezing weather last all day as well as night for this long.

I hope I dont lose anything, I think the pines and junis will be ok but I am a bit worried about a load of trees I dug up from the allotment in the autumn! They're in the greenhouse but it doesn't help when daytime temps are just as low as night

The general wisdom from the bonsai professionals is that native trees will be fine unless it is sub -10. I have put my very small trees and azaleas in the shed where it is still very cold but away from the wind and any rain. It’s hard not to worry but I think people like Harry Harrington and Corin Tomlinson have enough experience to be reliable information.

I've left small Chinese Elms on the floor under the benches. Now I'm worrying!

They’ll be fine. Chinese Elms are very tough!

We had it down to minus 11degrees one night and minus seven for 3 days so Im worried about my hardy fuchsia bonsais and some of the other younger plants and cuttings. Its thawing now so only time will tell!

I agree with Daryl - they'll all survive. Temperate trees have evolved to withstand harsh winter conditions.
I never do anything to mine - they all take their chances, and they are all still there after 20 years.
That's pines, junipers, elms, oaks, limes, hazels, zelkvas, acers, sycamores, loniceras, box, and hawthorn.

I don't do much special with mine. One I've brought in (mulberry) as it seems to die back every winter outside.

Its gone from one extreme to another !Its now so mild the carp in the local lake are swimming about actively looking for food on the surface! Lets hope we dont next get the tail end of the snow storms now hitting North America- minus 50 Fahrenheit anyone?!

I recall a really bad spring in 2010 when I lost 18 trees, My old mate Don (Stymie) lost over 40

Alan Harriman reckoned it was an extended cold snap that lasted two weeks in the autumn of 2009 which stopped thew sap returning to the roots for the kick start in the following spring, My deciduous started bud swelling but then stopped, When I touched the buds they just fell off and the trees never recovered!, Mine seem ok after the recent week of sub zero temps and I reckon all will rise to the challenge in spring! :smallthumb:
