Hi everyone, bonsai tree virgin here.
I've just got my very first tree and everything I'm reading about looking after a CE is a bit overwhelming. My tree is a good size and I like the style of it, but I'm unsure when to trim it and I want to wire one of the branches as it's growing the wrong way. Any help and tips would be useful

Hi Sam and welcome. I'll try and help Don (our moderator) out by saying firstly that a picture helps us to give you context sensitive advice. The easiest way to get pics onto your posts is uploading pics to a (free) photobucket account. You just then copy & paste the link. The photobucket albums also help you to see progress over time which can be a great motivating factor.

I used to use photobucket, but wouldn't recommend it any more. Better options are imgur (no account needed), flickr or google photos.

The best advice for now would be to not prune it. You should let it grow out a bit to stay healthy anyway, but you shouldn't prune anything unless you know why you're doing it and are doing it for a good reason. For wiring you'll first need the correct bonsai wire of the right thickness, or you could use an anchor instead.

Welcome to weetrees. Lots of friendly and experienced people on board here who will help you.

First thing to say apart from agreeing with the above to try to post a photo is to say a chinese elm is an excellent choice for a first tree. Basically very robust and forgiving and also looks nice as well.

A couple of questions - where are you keeping it and how often are you watering it? If you could answer these question along with a photo I'm sure there will be plenty of good advice to help you on your way.

Showing us a photograph taken against a plain background would be most helpful as mentioned.
