I've used perlite with gravel topping and pure coir in the past. The coir is good and dosn't need much vigilance on watering, also great for not compacting. Pears and apples, oaks, norway maple, chesnuts like it. Its just £1 for compressed 10 litr in Poundland. I use it to establish collected material fast, although fine molar is just as good.

Perlite gives the most impressive root systems & seedling success, just needs a regular light feed as it dosn't hold nutrients and it will dry out compleatly so beware. Great results for citrus, pomegranates, berberis, peachs, apricots, pines. £3.99 for 10 ltr in Wilcos.
Wouldn't mix the two materials as it will hold too much water very quickly I found and was hard to dry out again.
Never use vermiculite, nasty soggy stuff!

Its some years since I grew Japanese maple but I used the perlite then to good effect, with gravel base & top, kept constantly moist.

Right now I'm trying Tesco catlitter with a little Kyodama type material.....dunno yet.....imagine it will have much the same results as the perlite. I must remember to leave the young plants somewhere cool on hot days this summer, even the shade was reaching 30c in my yard some days.

I have some Acer palmatum seedlings now in their second year. I have just transferred them into a mix of 50% good quality potting compost, 25% perlite and 25% coarse grit. I am probably not as experienced with seedlings as 'lameusername' but it seems to work ok. The most important thing is to have good drainage.

Home Bargains have blocks of coir at 69p at the moment, and Aldi have some decently priced perlite

You could try feeding with this - had great results in just 2 weeks used at 1ml a litre! - (soil application)
