Post subject:  Newbie Questions

Hi folks! I'm a newbie to the bonsai world. I joined Weetrees last year and got hold of a few trees to start with but as I was moving house (moved from Wimborne, Dorset to Carlisle in Cumbria) all my trees are in pots! I know the general advice is to get young trees in to the ground to get them bulking up, and I have a couple of questions - hope that's ok?

Can I just plant them in the borders?
Should I do anything to the soil before planting?
Should I feed with bonemeal / fish blood and bone?
Should I put some manure in the ground? (same as I do when I plant shrubs etc)
Should I put them in pond baskets in the ground?
Why do some of you say about putting tiles under the trees in the ground?
I don't have any tiles - can I use brick paviours?
Should I wire young trees before I plant them? Or do you leave wiring until they are in pots?

Sorry for the long list !!

I have some other questions about individual trees but thought I'd better save them!

Thanks all,

Andy

1, Yes, as long as there is room for growth
2. They will appreciate some feed or blood/fish/bone which will break down in time
3. see above
4. Manure can be quite strong, especially new stuff. trouble is you don't know how strong.
5. Pond baskets are used above ground, when the roots get to the light they stop and so you get more roots behind it, instead of great long roots
6. Tiles or old CD's are used to force the roots to grow shallow and outwards [don't use your best music CD's]
7. Use a CD
8. I never wire before putting in the ground they will grow fast and the wire will just cut in.... unless you can keep a very good eye on them

Hope this helps

Brilliant!! Thanks Paul. Should I be trimming the roots before I plant? Of just put them straight in the ground on top of the CD?

Depends on what you find with the roots and how much of a root ball there is. Tease them out until you find the base of the tree and lay the roots out to spread radially around the tree, then back fill

If in doubt, leave as much root as possible
