I collected 4 of these from around a tree i thought was Blackthorn but now I'm not so sure? I later went out and collect one I'm positive on, not sure it will survive though as it had a serious lack of roots and a huge feeder root I cut and sealed.. |

It certainly has the thorns and the bark. the lack of roots is usual because they often propagate through sucker roots running fairly close to the surface like an umbilical cord from a parent tree. Sometimes they pop up three metres away. I hope that you rear that one OK. |

That's good, the large one the the black container has the full root ball, it's still in the soil it came out with at the moment and surrounded in potting soil... Any tips on what to do next? Leave it for a few years or get it in a free draining soil? Pruning, luckily the said tree had a very low branch that could possibly be a new leader, although it is barely a twig atm!-) How many years before they start to get there black Cork bark? Guessing it's about 6-7 years old atm. |

I kept such a root sucker of 6 feet height in a plastic bucket for a year before giving it to my daughter for her orchard. For the first six weeks it was in an unheated greenhouse with the door open. I couldn't say how long they take to get the rough bark. Your pics suggest that one is on its way. |
