What do you guys do when you've had a plant in the ground for a few years, or get the opportunity do lift a Yamadori, and the roots are rubbish? Say, they all go down rather than out? or curl around themselves? I am learning about roots being "veins" to live parts of the tree so I understand that you cant just cut them off? Is there a fix? Or is it just tough?

What species are we talking? I've done a lot of this recently with young trees (starters I've bought) and the rule is the younger the tree the quicker you can move. In some cases after only 1 years growth without proper root control I've then had to cut away between 50-90% of the roots just to get them back on track. You can only do this with the tougher deciduous trees and not with conifers.

I think you'll have to go with gradual reduction (vertically) year on year getting more and more feeder roots higher up the root base so you can eventually get it in a pot. Growing out and thickening up roots suitable for good nebari after that is going to take a lot of time IMO. (I've not done it yet so it's just my current opinion). I think most people would say it's tough just live with it.

Be aware that the opposite is also true - cutting off large branches which feed major roots can lead to them dying back, destroying a potentially good nebari.

In some circumstances where you have a truly ugly root system you can ground layer and effectively start the root system all over again above the existing one.

Being able to graft is also a really good technique to employ - voids can be filled and roots placed exactly where you want them.

With yamadori you have obviously little control over the nebari so the above techniques are useful to have in your locker. I did a thread somewhere about how to grow a good root spread using spacers, ties, boarding, screws and lolly sticks on a Pyracantha I was going to put in the ground. If you grow your own maybe take a look if you're not familiar with it - in the long run it saves a lot of time and effort later on.

Not species specific really, Gary. Being new, I'm just trying to increase my knowledge! Hope it's not boring!

Thanks Paul, I've found that thread and am about to have a read. So does that mean that you can remove a poorly placed root without killing the tree? I am intrigued by the idea of grafting a root - is that the same concept as grafting top growth?

Not boring at all. Ask, do, learn, repeat. It's the best way. Most of my trees are getting their roots sorted based on Paul's method and if you're reading a lot of the posts you'll see my attempts to use it. In terms of removing poorly placed roots as you say it all depends on whether the species has roots that acts as veins (typically conifers I believe). In many species of deciduous trees the roots all contribute to the overall pot so you can chop them off if you don't overdo it or do it at the wrong time of year.

Yes, exactly the same. So if you do a thread or approach graft (obviously with a cutting / seedling on its own roots) you separate the top foliage when the graft takes.

I did a tutorial somewhere on thread grafting on here (I think it was an oak) but if you can't find it here's another external link:
