Hi all haven't posted in a while but weather is changing and getting excited for a new year. Recently got an allotment and seeing as I'm moving house I've decided to move plants there whilst there dormant. This is my largest stump and it's been in the ground for 2years and has little roots. How can I encourage stronger roots to grow now it's in its new location.

i think you need to let those branches go for a couple seasons, you can chop back later, but the top needs lots of strong healthy unchecked growth. also, once its planted in, sprinkle the surface with chicken pellets.
bit strange for a field maple not to have grown more roots in a couple seasons in the ground though, maybe there is another problem. healthy top growth=strong roots, unless somethings been munching on them.

I'm with Bobby on this. You'd expect loads of roots by now. They've been eaten or the tree is unwell and living off it's reserves. Any chance it was in very dense wet soil before? Hopefully the change of environment will remove the problem. You could make score marks and/or make some windows cuts on the underside of the existing large roots to provide lots of opportunities for new root growth, perhaps even smearing the cuts with rooting hormone.

When you dug it up did you snap off a lot of root? Field maple are usually extremely resilient and the lack of roots is surprising. Improve the soil, mix in some gravel, get it in a spot that receives morning sun if possible and let it grow untouched for a few years. It needs to grow vigourously to replenish those feeder roots - a healthy field maple should be chucking out shoots 3ft in length. Don't be tempted to dig it up until you see these shoots - it'll only set it back farther.

That's all you can do for now, hopefully it'll pull through. If you found any nasty white grubs around the roots they need to be removed and put a top dressing of gravel around the base of the tree to deter weevils from laying eggs . Normally, this wouldn't be an issue given the extensive root system on most trees but I'd say this is at a tipping point state if it's been like this 2 years.

Hi what I do when I have a tree with this problem is wrap sphagnum moss around the thick wooded roots and secure it quite tightly with a string or twine that will rot away over the course of a couple of years and then plant it in a large container in a mix of cat litter and grit and if you have some to hand small pine bark particles. This approach has worked for me many times on material I have collected that has had very little root like your tree.
All the best with your tree Nigel.

Thanks for all the help. I will leave it in the ground until it is growing strong and maybe next year put some window cuts inbetween the large roots and maybe thread graft some roots too. I really hope it does well as think it's got great potential. I will try the chicken pellets once it begins to grow well.

Hope you can revive it.
