Just some thoughts - which would need to be validated looking at the tree closer up. Even if you disagree it'll give you something to think about.

1. Tilt the tree slightly to make the primary trunk a little more upright (balanced)
2. Cut off the upward growing thick branches (red lines) and jin the secondary trunk/branch below
3. Carefully reduce the number of branches in the blue circle which are all growing from one point and starting to form a knuckle (probably the smaller weaker ones)
4. Wire the remaining branches down as per the arrows matching the gentle downward angle of the red lines on the suggested jin.
5. Keep the lowest branch (green box) if possible making sure it's not too shaded out and as long as it's not obviously from the inside of a bend. Can it go to the back from this angle?
6. Review and style your apex.

Thanks Gary and Sizzla for the virts. Not being a club member, it's great getting advice from you all. I have been thinking along very similar lines to Gary's idea.
Thanks very much.

Hi, just an update on my Mugo. As suggested by Stymie, I've jinned the first branch which was dead anyway. This is my first ever attempt at jin. I've left it as big and long as possible so I have the option of reducing it if needed later. Any comments welcome.

Good stuff. Are you planning to further style or reduce the remaining foliage areas?

Hi Gary,
This pine has a couple of branches to the rear that are dying. Therefore I'm taking things slowly and waiting to see what branches survive and it's vigour before any further styling or rootball reduction.

Good progress but my concern would be why are the branches dying?. I would be wanting to check those roots if you haven’t already. Garden centre soil not always the best

That's got me worried. I was assuming that the dodgy branches were dying due to lack of light from the garden centre care. I hoped I could resolve this by giving more light and feeding as the rest of the foliage looks pretty healthy. The roots looked OK to me but there did seem to be a lack of mycorrhizal fungus.
Should I wait to see what happens over the growing season, emergency repot or treat for vine weevil?
Thanks.

If it were vine weevil it would have died very quickly in a pot (that's my experience anyway).

I suspect the die back is caused by shading from the density of the foliage. Pines are very sensitive to insufficient light. You have to choose which branches to keep or the tree will.

I've opened the canopy a little by removing a few shoots and bent a couple of branches into better position for light. I don't want to over bend the already weaker branches. I think I need to let it rest for the growing season. The medium is moist but not sodden, I read that Mugos tolerate more moisture than other pines anyhow. New pics,
