You could leave that stump for a while, depending on what tools you have it will be easier to shape it down when it's a bit softer

I quite like pic 3&4 as a potential front.

Thanks guys. Cool, glad to know there's not a rush to carve. I'm less confident at that than anything else (and that's saying something!). Thanks for the suggestion on the front. I really wasn't sure at all on that!

If you've just repotted, don't do any carving until the pot is full of roots again and the tree is absolutely rock solid in the pot. Otherwise you'll damage new feeder roots.

Good point, thanks!

Update after almost two growing seasons complete. It's got some ramification, but also had some interior branching die off. I've been reducing the surface area of larger leaves to stop the interior getting shaded out this year which seems to have helped. There's some straight sections that need addressing too. Wondering what I should do next (nothing til spring I guess?). Is it worth moving down to a slightly smaller pond basket or training pot if it doesn't need such vigorous growth? (I remember reading someone saying that a pot is a tool too - use a big for big growth, smaller pot for small growth - don't know if that applies here or if I'm taking it too literally)

I can't see the pictures. Just a no entry sign. I had this problem myself from time to time with google photos and switched to IMGbb in the end.

Pics gone?

Ah, damn google images! I found a plugin that was meant to make it hassle free to share images but clearly that didn't work! Re-hosted them on imgbb, hopefully they're visible now?

Yep - images showing. Smaller pots definitely reduce growth and if you want to avoid coarseness when entering refinement it becomes necessary. Some of my trees in refinement have now ramified enough that they're using their pots to maximum capacity and send out very little new growth beyond the first leaves. Of course the downside is more maintenance to keep them healthy. One missed watering and the tree could be done for and if you do need new growth then there's limited capacity for that.
