First, a little bit of history for newer members....

Before this lovely forum was born it had a predecessor which some of us oldies belonged too. During those early days, I met up with another forum member and we both joined Sutton Bonsai Club, meeting up there once a month. That was the first time that I had met up with a forum friend in the flesh. Since then, we have met up many times to go to shows and enjoy looking at the trees and discussing their merits.

We weren't able to meet at the Heathrow Show this year so yesterday I took a drive and paid him a visit at his home where we looked at his tree collection and had some lunch. And then my bonsai friend of many years very kindly gave me this tree as he is planning to down size his collection.

So a big Thank You, John M, what a great addition to my collection! I will treasure it and it will be henceforth known as John's Larch :hatoff:

He is indeed a wise man - in more ways than just trees. He is very learned and knowledgeable about so many things.
Are you blushing, John  :smallthumb:

Well yes, frankly! Although everything you have all written on this thread is absolutely true. ;-)

The larch, BTW, is a Japanese - Larix kaempferi, and has a lot of promise, but a difficult nebari,
as you can see from the photo kindly provided by Daryl..

I have 73 trees (now 72), and anybody who wants to come and see them is very welcome. Some of them
are quite nice. You could help me downsize by just choosing one or two and taking them away. Pm me if
you are interested. I don't intend to sell them them, so long as they go to good WeeTrees homes, but I
might want to negotiate a price for some of the better developed ones, or for nice pots. And I'm keeping
a few good ones for myself....

No photos - not possible - you'll have to come and look.

J.

Now that it has shed its leaves / needles, I have had a good look at the structure. Today I chose the best front (with the least number of lumpy scars) and I think the untidy nebari can easily be disguised by planting a bit deeper in the pot with a slightly different potting angle next year. I reduced the number of branches and added a bit of wire to move one at the back to fill a gap.

At the top of the trunk there are some problems with the taper so it will need a new leader. If I go with a cut at the red line, there will still be a bit of a lump. Is it possible to cut a deep vertical wedge at the back of the trunk and bind it tightly to narrow the overall look of the trunk?

I can see about 3 trees there......... :07hysterical:

It would improve the taper of each.

The lump at the top would make a nicer shohin tree if you could air layer that off first.

But in the end of the day the tree is yours to do with
