Hi guys, one of the reasons I have gotten into bonsai is because I have access to a large amount of material on a nature reserve where I live, most of which will be destroyed to make way for habitat creation etc and the rest just because I can! These are mainly hawthorn, field maple, elm and various prunus so I am wondering about times to collect and methods etc.

I know most of the literature says to collect just before bud break and there are well used techniques for certain species such as sweating in bags, but it seems to me that a lot of the information has come from places that are dissimilar to the British winter, with our being milder than a lot of places. We also have a bare root season where tree growers provide stocks for nurseries and that method seems to work well enough. So that being said, does anybody have experience of collecting trees throughout the dormant period and what methods are used if successful?

Thank you John. I read these a few months a go when I first thought about collecting, but reading them back after subsequent research, they are a lot more prescient. The main point of my question though was that logically, to me at least, it makes sense that the best time to collect a tree would be while it is dormant and flow of sap is at a minimum then, because we don't have such savage winters as elsewhere, more protection can be afforded and they have longer to recover before Spring. Then again maybe they can only properly recover in Spring.

I guess I’m going to experiment anyway. I collected a few in September, as per Harry Harrington’s advice, so we’ll see how they get on as well. Obviously I’m not looking to reinvent the wheel, I just wondered if anybody had had any luck with winter collecting.

Deciduous trees can only properly start to recover in spring. They can recover if given enough time in autumn, the sap flow will be slower, but in winter when they are dormant, they cannot recover but as long as you can protect them from anything detrimental, such as root rot to the freshly cut roots, they should keep until they can start to recover.

Where are you? I am in Kent and I mostly collect late spring, as that's the time I have found gives me the highest survival rates, especially with the native species you describe.

It may go against advice given but I have had my best successes with winter collection. I have always put it down to the soft boggy soil giving up the roots more easily. I do give them protection but any transplanted tree needs extra care whatever the season.
