Post subject:  Chinese Elm problems
Hi can anyone help me with my small Chinese Elm? I’m getting these wet jelly like patches on the bark. The same happened this time last year with no apparent long term ill effects. I think it’s sap but I’m not sure. Has anyone ever seen anything like it? The affected bark was below soil level until the last few days. Picture attached.

It’s not very clear from your image but I would say it is a kind of algae that likes the condition you have created under the moss ie damp and dark. Try getting rid of the moss and letting it dry out, preferably in the sunshine if you get any. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about but others on here might know more.

Soil is too wet, this causes the jelly like. It doesn't cause problems but is an indicator of wet. The moss won't help as Daryl has said.
Check that the drainage hole hasn't been blocked

Hi all

Thanks for your replies. I repotted in spring 2020 and planted deep to protect the roots. So all I’ve done recently is pull away the excess soil and only applied the moss a few days ago. There was no moss all spring and summer.

Keep it a bit drier then and it should be fine. It might be worth scraping off whatever you can.

A toothbrush is your friend in this situation! Like others, I agree some sunshine and removing the moss will do the trick.

I agree with the other replies. I had this same thing on three or four trees last year ( sorry cant remember which species but all different. Brush it off and leave to dry out in the sun if you can.
havent had any recurrence since

So the situation has got a lot worse. It’s as if this jelly has exploded from under the bark all around the trunk. I’ve removed the moss and removed the jelly with a toothbrush but I’m not sure how deep the damage is.

That looks as if the bark has come off too! And it still looks very wet.

In fact it doesn’t look like the same trunk - it suddenly looks much taller before the dividing point to the two branches. Is it the camera angle?

And it’s in a different pot!
